e Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Ondo State Lost one of his Doctors on Christmas eve. Dr Akintayo Oguntuase, who was found dead in his clinic in Akure after on was razed by a mysterious fire in the eve of Christmas. Universal Medical Clinic was in flames at the midnight of December 24 when residents of Araromi area of the city were in a festive mood and by the time the billows of the fire faded out in the morning of December 25, the proprietor, Oguntuase, was found burnt and mutilated. While the police in Ondo are still examining the different theories that could lead to unraveling the cause of the fire, the deceased’s family has concluded that the medical practitioner was killed by assassins and burnt to give a semblance of a fire accident. Otunba Ben Oguntuase, the elder brother of the deceased, in a statement made available to newsmen said, “Dr David Akintayo Oguntuase, a consultant pediatrician and head of pediatrics at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, was brutally murdered by assassins/arsonists.”

Loujain Al Hathloul, 25 and Maysa Al Amoudi, 33 who were arrested after driving into Saudi Arabia from the UAE, are supporters of a grassroots campaign launched in October of last year against the ban. Loujain Al Hathloul, who has a UAE driver’s licence, was detained at the Saudi border and had her passport confiscated.  Maysa Al Amoudi, was also held after she arrived to deliver food, water and a blanket to Al Hathloul. "Under Jonathan we seem to have gone from frying pan to fire. If in the past corruption was in the corridors of power, it would seem now to be in the sitting room, dining room and bedroom of power." In his scathing new autobiography, My Watch, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo made a series of critical assertions against current President Goodluck Jonatan Due to the nature of the content, an ally of President Jonathan attempted to use a court order to block the publication of the book. President Jonathan also personally contacted the former president to appeal that the book not be published until next year, after the 2015 presidential election. Despite this My Watch launched yesterday, Dec. 9, in Lagos, in the presence of prominent political figures and officials. Review of the three-volume text by SaharaReporters noted that the elder statesman holds nothing back, characterizing Mr. Jonathan as weak, callous and incapable of managing Nigeria. He also criticizes the handling of the Boko Haram insurgency crisis, the PDP, and the Governors Forum, among other things. Excerpts from some of the most significant critiques are below. On President Jonathan's character: Jonathan is lacking in broad vision, knowledge, confidence, understanding, concentration, capacity, sense of security, courage, moral and ethical principles, character and passion to move the nation forward on a fast trajectory. Although he might wish to do well, he does not know how nor does he have the capacity to. To compound his problem he has not surrounded himself with aides sufficiently imbued with the qualities and abilities to help him out. Most of them are greedy hangers-on or hungry lacklustre characters interested only in their mouths and their pockets President Jonathan can still make amends to save himself, many of his associates in government, his government, and the nation. If, in the end, he fails he will have no one but himself to blame. He has great opportunities, many of which only come once in a lifetime; and if he misses them it will only be due to his inadequacy, myopia, personal interest and self-aggrandisement, lack of sagacity, wisdom. I hope he can and will avoid having any cause for regret. The longest period that I have met one-on-one with the president was for one hour and ten minutes. That whole time, the president talked about nothing that was in the interest of Nigeria; instead he kept pointing out his supposed enemies and various matters that would not serve his interests. I could not stop myself from blurting out: “Mr. President, no Nigerian should be your enemy. You have to rule over all of them whether or not they like you. Please, you have to be like rain falling on good and bad people alike.” An elder statesman who formed a close relationship with President Jonathan very early in his presidency came to the conclusion, after six months, that the president has not got what it takes to lead. It was the same elder statesman who reportedly tried to jolt the president into action by telling him that there were five presidents in Nigeria, and these were his wife the first lady, Deziani, Oduah, Ngozi and the president himself, and that he was the weakest of the five. With the 2011 elections, heavy financial prices were paid to Lagos and Ondo State opposition political leaders to secure the vote for the president, against the interest of PDP at the state level...The situation where the president surreptitiously invited Bola Tinubu, lifting him at night by presidential aircraft from Lagos to Abuja to hatch a plan for Bola to support one PDP presidential candidate at the expense of all other PDP candidates for any office in Lagos, can only be described as obscene, unethical, corruption-ridden and a show of bad leadership...Whatever amount of money was given to Bola Tinubu to procure votes for the 2011 presidential election in Lagos was, to say the least, unnecessary. What made this phenomenon particularly bad was that government had raised the money from government transactions which fuel corruption. I got a warning that this administration was attempting to induce two of my daughters, including Iyabo, to do a dirty job. I warned them both against it, but because of her character, the influence of her mother and her attitude, Iyabo succumbed; the other daughter did not. On the Boko Haram insurgency, the insecurity crisis, and #BringBackOurGirls: I was in Sierra Leone on the day Boko Haram [bombed] the UN building in Abuja. As soon as I returned to Nigeria I called the inspector-general of police to hear his views on the issue. I was not impressed with his explanation. I also talked to the then national security adviser and his explanation was substantially blank. I went to Jonathan, the president, on the same issue. His reaction, and his view that Boko Haram were ‘a bunch of riffraffs’ left me even colder. The one incident that overtly and graphically exposed the ineptitude, ineffectiveness, inefficiency, carelessness, cluelessness, callousness, insensitivity and selfishness of Goodluck Jonathan was the abduction of about 276 school girls from Chibok in Borno State by Boko Haram. The reaction and attitude of our president and his household was non-belief, to the extent that 18 days passed before he grudgingly concede to accept the reality of the abduction. If serious action had been taken within 48 hours, the story could have been different. I was not surprised that the president went dancing twenty-four hours after the Nyanya explosion that took seventy-five lives. I also found believable the statement allegedly credited to the president after both the Nyanya explosion and the Chibok school girls abduction to the effect that since some people in the North had said that they would make Nigerian ungovernable, they could keep on killing and abducting each other. If these girls are not released, it will be a big dent on the presidency of Goodluck Jonathan, and a dark blot on Nigeria’s reputation and history; and, for years and indeed decades, Nigeria will continue to live with the agony and memory of the action and inaction of leadership regarding the Chibok school girls. But what is more, a bad precedent would have been created; Boko Haram has tasted blood and will always want more… Who knows, another group of terrorists might have learned from Boko Haram. This time it is Chibok; next time it could be Ibogun or Otueke. Vice-President Biden had categorically told Jonathan during the African Summit in Washington in August 2014 that with the state of his governance and the level of the destruction of the military, they would not be able to help Nigeria. On PDP and party politics: A political party, and its leadership, that condones corruption and engages discredited people to abuse and insult genuine, authentic and objective critics is a political party on the path of ruin and destruction. The PDP must be rescued from that path, otherwise it will soon fade into history. Criticism, particularly objective criticism, is an indispensable element of democracy and a democratic dispensation. PDP would need to be brought back to being a well-led, disciplined and respected, harmonious party that can easily win elections, rule and govern, and not one sacrificing the party’s interest for personal gain, setting governors of the party against each other, supporting candidates of other parties against candidates of the party as it happened in Lagos, Edo and Ondo States, and harassing credible leaders of the party and seeking to replace them with criminals and dubious characters in order to further presidential interests. On the Nigerian Governors Forum election crisis: Two governors from the [PDP] - Liyel Imoke of Cross River and Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta States - and Godswill Akpabio from Akwa Ibom State by himself, came to me in Abuja, appealing to me to intervene in the situation of the Governors’ Forum, particularly in the disagreement within the PDP governors. Akpabio said starkly in his frank and outspoken manner: “We have messed up and don’t leave us alone. For me, I don’t want to go to jail and my children are too young. I will report our meeting to the President.” Nobody, including President Jonathan, would like to go to jail, and he knew he could, depending on how things turned out or failed to shape from then on. I have always seen the Governors’ Forum as a type of trade union as they behave that way most of the time. [Jonathan] told the story of how Obong Atta was relieved of his position as chairman and Lucky Igbinedion was enthroned by less than fifty percent of the governors, and of how Bukola Saraki manoeuvred the Forum to serve his presidential ambition.

Insurgents belonging to the dreaded Islamist group Boko Haram last Wednesday abducted more than 20 women, most of them young girls, in Lassa, Borno State. A NIGERIAN SOLDIER TESTED POSITIVE TO EBOLA A United Nation peacekeeper who contracted Ebola in Liberia will be flown to the Netherlands for treatment, a Dutch Health Ministry spokeswoman said Friday. The Nigerian soldier will go into isolation at a "calamity unit" at the University Medical Center Utrecht, according to Inge Freriksen. He is expected to arrive in Amsterdam over the weekend and be transferred by ambulance to nearby Utrecht. Late Thursday, the U.N. mission announced in a statement that the soldier had tested positive for the dreaded disease a day earlier. The infection of the U.N. peacekeeper is the third for the mission, which comprises about 7,700 troops and police and has been in Liberia since 2003 to bring stability after civil war. The previous two died. The mission has so far identified 16 people who came into contact with the most recently infected soldier, and they have been quarantined, the statement said. Areas the peacekeeper visited while symptomatic have been decontaminated.

She stated that based on intelligence report it received three months ago, the deadly Islamic sect could be planning to bomb Lagos and possibly target the seaport. “We are not taking the threat lightly at all and we encourage all stakeholders who visit the port to keep their eyes and ears open in case of the activity of the sect,” said Ibifuro-Harisson who was represented by the Assistant Commissioner in charge of administration, Salem Machree. She said as part of measures put in place to check the threat, the Police had beefed up security within and around Lagos including the port environment, just as she disclosed that Police would remain alert and vigilant at ensuring that the violent sect did not hit the ports. It will be recalled that at least four persons were confirmed dead, when two explosions suspected to have emanated from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off near the Folawiyo Energy Depot on Creek Road, Apapa on June 25 this year.

Health officials in Odisha state have launched an investigation after reports that bicycle pumps were used on 56 women undergoing sterilization surgery at a government-run community health center in Banarpal, Angul district, Friday. The physician was identified as Dr. Mahesh Chandra Rout, a retired surgeon who carried out work when required for the clinic, said Odisha Health Secretary Arti Ahuja. She said he would no longer be called on to work for the clinic, and could face charges as a result of the inquiry. Ahuja said the medical equipment that should have been used in the procedure -- a carbon dioxode insufflator -- had been provided to the clinic, and investigators would try to determine why it was not used. But Sachin Ramachandra, a health official in the district where the procedures took place, said inquiries revealed the insufflator was missing, which is why the bicycle pump had been used instead. In the wake of the incident, state health officials issued a directive that all sterilizations must be carried out according to correct protocols.

GUNMEN ATTACK EKITI PRISON, FREE INMATES

Panic gripped Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State  capital city, on Monday when news filtered into town that some  heavily armed gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents  attacked  the Federal Prisons and freed some inmates .  The assailants, who were said to have besieged the place about 10.30pm, killed a prison official on guard, bombed  the main gate with the aid of a rocket launcher  and dynamite , just as they killed all the 20 sniffer dogs tied in front of  the gate.  Reliable sources confirmed to journalists during investigation that the gunmen, numbering  60, arrived in Hilux trucks, brandishing dangerous weapons such as cudgels, cutlasses, AK 47 rifles , charms and  chanted ‘Allahu Akbar’ as they shot sporadically into the air .   The source added that the gunshots  and the bombing were so deafening that the  inmates had to  run in different directions to prevent being mowed down by the gun-wielding assailants.  The source confirmed that the  Minister of Interior , Com. Abba Moro, was on his way to Ekiti to assess the situation .  However, when journalists visited the Prison located along Ado –Afao road, they were not allowed entry  into the premises of the prison.  Early in the morning, a statement aired on the state radio had alleged that the action was carried out by APC thugs to free a leader of Oodua People’s Congress, Niyi Adedipe, who was imprisoned on the order of the Court for alleged murder of a former chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Chief Omolafe Aderiye.  Denying the allegation, APC described it as another ploy by the PDP to tarnish the image of the APC in Ekiti state.  The Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Taiwo Olatubosun, who spoke on the telephone said: "What shall we gain for doing that. And our investigations led us to the identity of the maid, her victim and her master. Read on. The two year-old is seen terribly tortured by a maid we have ably identified as Jolly Tumuhiirwe, 22, a born of Rukungiri District. We have also identified the toddler鈥檚 father as Erick Kamanzi, a loaded staff at a reputable NGO in Kampala who released the video yesterday mid-morning. The video captured by interior security cameras early last week at Kamanzi鈥檚 home of Naalya, reveals a breath-taking story where Tumuhiirwe is trying to feed the baby. The baby, whom we have established was sick at the time, exhibits difficulty in coping with the rough and speedy rate at which Tumuhiirwe fed her. Tumuhiirwe then turns to the porridge and started eating it. But the tot could not contain the stuffed food down her throat. She threw up dreadfully. This invited Tumuhiirwe鈥檚 wrath. She landed a hot slap on the kid before throwing her off the sofa, her face kissing the floor. She remained there for a few seconds before Tumuhiirwe followed. Using a rechargeable torch, she clobbered her severely. Not done, she started kicking her and stepping on her back in turns. She finally gave her the last kick which sent her silent and unable to move. Tumuhiirwe then picked the baby like by one hand and vanished in the next room. Father Arrested According to family sources, Kamanzi last week came home and found some bruises on the baby鈥檚 hind. He did not ask what happened but he hastily went to review the cameras which, he had taken long to monitor. This was last Saturday November 15th 2014. What he saw is what was uploaded on the video that has been circulating for a while now. Raged to the marrow, Kamanzi bounced on Tumuhiirwe (the house help) and clobbered her to pulp. Done with it, he turned to tend to the baby as Tumuhiirwe ran to police where, she reported an assault case against her Master Kamanzi. The Kiwatule police swung into action, raided Kamanzi鈥檚 home and arrested him. He promptly confessed to the charge before he was dragged to cells. After cooling down, Kamanzi asked the Cops to look at what made him clobber the maid. A mere look at the video changed the cops鈥� stance and released Kamanzi. 聽 Speaking to the investigator today, police chief spokesman CP Fred Enanga confirmed that Tumuhiirwe鈥檚 case had been taken over by the events. Reading the file number as CRB 1346/14 of Kiira Road, Enanga said Tumuhiirwe was yesterday charged under Anti-torture Act at Nakawa Court. But Enanga hastily adds that police are contemplating on revising the charge and upgrade it to attempted murder. He said the Tumuhiirwe will re-appear in Court on December 8th 2014. Efforts to get hints on the baby鈥檚 mother were futile as family sources maintained silence on the question. With its jaw agape, exposing what appear to be fangs, it lives up to the name "Seadevil." But if you've seen the 2003 Pixar classic, "Finding Nemo," you might recognize the Seadevil as the fish that creeps up on an unsuspecting Nemo and Dory. The institute located the fish on a voyage with Doc Ricketts, their remotely operated vehicle, during a "midwater transect." "This means we 'fly' the robot through the water at a series of different depths (10 minutes at each depth), and count all the different types of animals we see," said institute spokeswoman Kim Fulton-Bennett. These transects have been taking place for over 20 years, and the Seadevil was certainly a big find. The video shows the aftermath of a beheading, in which the victim is not clearly recognizable. CNN has not been able to confirm the authenticity of the video nor the identity of the victim.

Kassig, 26, who converted to Islam in captivity, also went by the name Abdul Rahman Kassig.

Plea for mercy

A week after the video's release, Kassig's family released a YouTube video of its own, asking his captors to show mercy and free him.

Kassig's mother, Paula, addressed her son in the video. "We are so very proud of you and the work you have done to bring humanitarian aid to the Syrian people," she said.

The couple noted they were releasing the video on the same day of Islam's Eid al-Adah, or the Festival of Sacrifice, when Muslims slaughter lambs, goats, sheep and cattle and distribute the meat to the poor and their families.

2015 Nations Cup: Equatorial Guinea to host tournament

Equatorial Guinea have been named as the hosts for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, the Confederation of African Football has confirmed to the BBC.

Caf selected a replacement for Morocco after rejecting their request to delay the 17 January to 8 February finals.
Morocco were concerned over the spread of the outbreak of the Ebola virus.
Caf subsequently expelled Morocco from the relocated tournament, which will now be held in the country which co-hosted with Gabon in 2012.
Confederation of African Football's Junior Binyam told the BBC they have "no doubt" that it will be "a beautiful tournament" and one "up to the same standards of what we've seen in past years".
Equatorial Guinea will now take on sole responsibility for holding the 16-team event.
Caf said the decision was made after a meeting in Malabo on Friday between Equatorial Guinea's president Teodoro Obiang and Caf president Issa Hayatou.
African football's governing body also announced that Equatorial Guinea will play in the tournament - despite the team being disqualified in July for fielding an ineligible player in a preliminary qualifier against Mauritania on 17 May.
Hayatou said in a statement:  "The head of state of Equatorial Guinea agreed to host the competition.
"As a result, the Caf executive committee confirms that the tournament will go ahead and Equatorial Guinea will compete as the host nation.
"Caf wishes to express its sincere thanks to the Equatorial Guinean people, its government and particularly president Obiang."
Matches will be held at four venues in Bata, Ebebiyin, Mongomo and the capital Malabo. In 2012, only Malabo and Bata were used.
The draw for the finals will be in Malabo on 3 December
